The Waters of March

The Waters of March

Metamorphosis He lived with a white caterpillar. His wife was forming inside of it. He waited for her patiently. In the meantime the larva devoured his books, papers, records, and clothing. When he wanted to speak, it would stick its snout into his mouth and swallow his words with the same yearning that a baby suckles his mother's milk. At last its great stomach began to split open. The caterpillar howled like a wounded dog and ran under the bed to take shelter. After a few violent thrashings a perfect, luminous, and autonomous woman emerged from the cocoon. She flew about the bedroom with with iridescent wings, briefly kissed the man's lips leaving a trace of sugary saliva, and fled through the window to get lost among the stars. He wandered around the house dragging his feet. He sobbed for hours holding the empty larva, until finally, he climbed inside of it and waited crouched there, begging for a pair of his own wings that would allow him to reach the sky and fly until he found her.
